Having watched the TV Series Route 66 in the early 60’s I drove the highway, for the first time in late 1967, from California to Texas. Since then I’ve driven different stretches of the road many times. What has always intrigued me were the old, quite often, abandoned buildings, motels, garages, diners, etc. The ghosts of Route 66.
In 1989 & 1992 I went on my first trips to photograph a portion of the old Route 66, from Victorville California to Albuquerque New Mexico, not because it was a famous transportation route at one time but because of what was left behind, the remains of Route 66. I continue my photography of Route 66 every time I drive along Interstate 40. While still photographing with my 4 x 5, I am also now using a 35mm digital camera.
All photography for this project was done using a 4 x 5 camera, and black & white film. I made contact sheets from the negatives at the time but did not print anything until mid 2018.
